IT and Development

Of course why we don’t use Information Technology for our country development process. Now a days majority of srilankans have the feeling of being a developed country in future. It may be cause of the war situation that country is facing now. Anyway in this blog, the idea I want to tell is we have the ability to be a strong nation and we can earn more money by help of Information Technology. My blog is, concerning the topic in two different sub topics.

IT for Local development

In this topic I’m going to talk about how the IT can use locally and how it affects to country development. Of course we are living in a third world country but it doesn’t restrict our usage of IT for developing process. All of know India is an under developed country but now it consider as one of the pioneer IT potential country in the world.

Hear I mention some ideas which are used in developed countries successively and we also can used those are for local developing process.

1. In Transportation there are so many accidents occurs. In railway sector why we can’t control all the traveling in a centralize manner. Then we can control all the travels of trains in a secure manner and then there be not more accidents.

2. Issuing process of Identity Card is not a secure process and efficient. But we can use use finger print or eye sight to identify a person and we can maintain a centralize database for all the people in country. Now there is no any way to illegal Identity Card issuing and every person can identify as real person. If security process they need information of a person they can used person profile for this.

3. We can see considerable amount of productions of farmers are destroy in useless manner. One of main reason of that is miss understanding of farmers and consumers. If we can fill this gap with help of IT what a surprise. Of course we can make a centralize system those farmers and customers can make business and then it will reduce the destroy of crops of farmers.

But you can argue with me how will farmers can access with internet. Of course currently they haven’t PCs in their houses but most of them used mobile phone. We can make application which are running on the mobile platforms. We can use their own languages for interactions with the system. But first we have to set out mindset for this. I remember one time in health sector employers didn’t work in normal working hours and most of them go to work in other private hospitals and dispensaries. This was done by mostly blood checking persons and doctors. What the government did they have introduce new working our marking system for them. But the workers did the strikes and finally government agreed their asking. So still that workers do that fucking cunning thing and waste general people money. If this is the mindset of people who like to develop the country it will impossible to happened.

Anyway now you agreed with me, that the IT can help to develop the country in locally.

IT for Exporting

In hear I’m considering about what great deal of market for IT products in outside countries and what are the limitations for implementing it in Sri Lanka. As in above hear also I mainly use India as our heading country.

Actually India doesn’t have enough man power and capital when they starting the IT development. We know that India was more poorer country than Sri Lanka in past and I think now also. But what the government did they plane to develop IT industry in their country. Specially mainly based on Bangalore they actioning this. Now Bangalore has the nickname which we all know as “Silicon Vally”. That shows us It’s not impossible to develop the IT industry in a country like Sri Lanka too.

I can tell some achievements now they have gain by the help of IT developing . Now the main Income to India is IT products selling money. Amazing ah, but that’s true.

According to a NASSCOM-McKinsey report, annual revenue projections for India’s IT industry in 2008 are US $ 87 billion and market openings are emerging across four broad sectors, IT services, software products, IT enabled services, and e-businesses thus creating a number of opportunities for Indian companies. In addition to the export market, all of these segments have a domestic market component as well.

* Software & Services will contribute over 7.5 % of the overall GDP growth of India
* IT Exports will account for 35% of the total exports from India
* Potential for 2.2 million jobs in IT by 2008
* IT industry will attract Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) of U.S. $ 4-5 billion
* Market capitalization of IT shares will be around U.S. $ 225 billion

So why we can’t at least earn 10 $ billions? We know now Indian IT company also seek for opportunities for starting their company in our country be cause now their worker salary level has been increased. So why we missed this great opportunity!!!

For stating a company first we need capital. But luckily there are so many foreign IT companies are willing to invest to start IT companies. All of we know that like IBM, microsoft help for starting a company by giving money and also some companies like to start their owned IT companies in hear. So what is the problem for stating a IT company. That is the man power. There aren’t enough educated and technical people in Sri Lanka in IT sector. Still we have around 30,000 IT people and universities and private campuses don’t produce sufficient number of graduates. IT people doesn’t to be all software engineers they must be good system analysis, managers and so on. So if we think to develop Sri Lanka by the help of IT first we have to produce enough man power for that.

Hear I should mention in government university students go for strikes for stopping the private sector IT graduates producing. This was done by my self too in past. So first we must change our mindset. Like company “Vertusa” they are going build IT park in Sri Lanka like in Bangalore. Nice ah, that is good sign, Sri Lanka be a “Silicon vally” in future and my ambition also that.

    Hey asanga
Yes IT is an area which sri lanka can develop into a world class industry. If we have the will we can easily develop our human resources in IT. It is high time that we stop talking about 92% literacy of our country and try to increase the IT literacy of our people. So i hope to see your blog turned into a place where ideas are exchanged regarding the development of the IT industry in sri lanka. Keep it up.

  3. Hi Asanga,

Nice to see your blog coming up man… IT is something we must toil over for the sake of development. It’s a MUST! No arguments. On the other hand, SL is really capable of attracting IT outsourcing. So… let’s keep in mind that we are going for the GO! :)
